Michael Keaton Directs and Stars in Western Rode To Ruin

Michael Keaton is set to direct and star in the upcoming western Rode To Ruin. He will be joined by Morgan Freeman.

Keaton will play retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman. Freeman takes the role of outlaw Joseph Mulberry. The film's story follows Tillman's four-decade hunt for Mulberry, who killed Tillman's wife. A twist emerges as Mulberry is now losing his memory. Deadline's report mentions a "buried truth neither man may survive."

A Long-Awaited Reunion

This project reunites Keaton and Freeman for the first time since 1988. They last appeared together in the film Clean And Sober. In that movie, Keaton portrayed a real estate agent with substance abuse issues. Freeman played his drug rehab counsellor.

Keaton commented on the new script via Deadline. "When I first read it, I thought, this is really good, and there’s more here for Morgan and me to mine together," he said. "Once we talked, it became clear we were on the same page."

He drew a comparison to a classic film. "Just as The Shawshank Redemption isn’t simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin isn’t simply a Western," Keaton stated. "It’s a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West."

The Creative Team

The screenplay was written by R. Dean McCreary. He also shared his thoughts on the project. "Rode to Ruin is a deeply human story about forgiveness, revenge, redemption and the choices people make when time is running out," McCreary said. "The prospect of Michael directing and sharing the screen with Morgan is everything we hoped this film could become."

While widely known as an actor, Keaton has prior directing experience. His directorial credits include the 2008 film The Merry Gentlemen and the 2023 movie Know Goes Away. His most recent directing work was the short film Sweetwater. That project was part of Google's AI On Screen programme, which aimed to demystify artificial intelligence.

Production Status

No release date or window has been announced for Rode To Ruin. The report confirms the project is in development with Keaton attached as both director and star. The film is described as a western with layered human drama.

Keaton's latest acting role was in The Whisper Man, which recently debuted on Netflix. He is also known for his iconic role in Beetlejuice. The new western marks his return to directing a feature film.
