Malta Opens Bids for Land-Sea Super Stage Construction
Malta's film commission has launched a public call for private investors to finance and build a new €80 million soundstage complex designed to attract
Malta has officially opened submissions for proposals to finance, build, and operate a new Land-Sea Super Stage at its national film studios. The call, announced by Film Commissioner Johann Grech, seeks private investment exceeding €80 million for the ambitious facility.
Grech described the launch as the final piece in creating a world-class film industry for Malta. The goal is to develop a unique studio facility that completes the country's offering to global filmmakers. Malta has already hosted major franchises like Gladiator and Jurassic World, capitalizing on its versatile locations and existing water tanks.
"We are committed to taking Malta’s film infrastructure to the next level," Grech told The Hollywood Reporter. He stated the project would take two years to build the entire facility, which includes the soundstage, workshops, offices, and warehouses.
Project Ambitions and Design
The planned super stage is designed to host large-scale Hollywood blockbusters. Its blueprints include a substantial water tank and construction robust enough to suspend two Black Hawk helicopters. This infrastructure aims to make Malta a more competitive destination for complex productions.
"We want to create something unique," Grech said in a previous interview. The facility is intended to strengthen Malta's ability to attract high-budget, high-value film projects. Grech has expressed a consistent ambition to position the island nation as a home for the world's biggest movie franchises.
