Director Adam Wingard has confirmed the long-gestating Thundercats movie remains an active project, though it is not progressing quickly. In an interview with Polygon, Wingard attributed the delay to the demands of his other film commitments.
Wingard, known for directing Godzilla Vs Kong and the upcoming Netflix film Onslaught, was signed by Warner Bros. for the Thundercats adaptation back in 2021. Regular collaborator Simon Barrett was set to co-write the script. The director's schedule has since filled with other projects, including a second Monsterverse film and Onslaught, pushing the Thundercats movie down the priority list.
Development History and Current Status
The live-action and CGI Thundercats film was first announced nearly two decades ago. It has seen numerous iterations since, including a leak of test footage in 2011. Wingard's involvement began three years ago, but momentum has stalled.
Wingard told Polygon that a new draft of the script was completed at the start of this year. Production was then paused so he could finish work on Onslaught. "It's not dead. It lives," Wingard insisted to the outlet. However, he admitted the challenge is "finding the time to really re-concentrate and re-engage with it."

Adam Wingard's calendar is currently occupied by several high-profile films. After directing Godzilla Vs Kong for Warner Bros. and Legendary, he is working on its sequel, Godzilla Vs Kong: The Next Empire. He has also been deeply involved with Netflix's Onslaught. Around the time of his Thundercats hiring, he was also linked with a potential Face/Off 2 project.
This spread of commitments has left the Thundercats movie, as the source describes, "pouting in its basket for the time being." The project awaits a window when Wingard can dedicate his full attention to it.
