Vin Diesel hints at directing Fast Forever on Instagram

Vin Diesel has hinted he might take over as director of the long-delayed Fast Forever. The actor posted a cryptic message to Instagram, writing "Director… Hmmm…" alongside a photo of his character Dominic Toretto's Dodge Charger.

The sequel to 2023's Fast X remains in development limbo over three years later. The project has faced repeated script rewrites and efforts by Universal to control costs. Diesel previously suggested filming could begin in December, but only "if I can make good on the request from the studio," he told Variety.

Director uncertainty

Louis Leterrier, who took over directing duties from Justin Lin on Fast X, is theoretically expected to return. Leterrier recently completed work on the Netflix film The Last House. However, he has not been officially announced as the director for Fast Forever.

Speaking to Polygon in August, Leterrier expressed enthusiasm but was cryptic about his involvement. "Well, uh, I’d love to tell you the full truth, but I can’t," Leterrier said. He added, "I was very, very lucky to be part of the franchise, and I love Vin and I love Universal." The report notes his use of the past tense "was."

Script and production rumors

Diesel had claimed the latest draft of the Fast Forever script was so emotionally powerful it made him cry. When asked about that screenplay, Leterrier revealed he had not yet read it. This discrepancy adds to the unclear status of the project.

Production rumors have been inconsistent. Diesel once posted material that hinted filming had started, but it was later revealed he was shooting a football advertisement featuring a Fast and Furious car.
