Josh Hutcherson on Hunger Games Return

Josh Hutcherson says his reported return to 'The Hunger Games' franchise is not confirmed. In an interview with Refinery29, the actor described his potential reunion with co-star Jennifer Lawrence as 'allegedly amazing.'

He was asked about returning to play Peeta Mellark alongside Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming prequel, 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.' Hutcherson clarified his status, stating he is 'allegedly returning. It has not been confirmed.'

Cast Reunion Rumors

Reports last December claimed Hutcherson and Lawrence would reprise their roles. Their characters appear in the novel the film is based on, but in a limited capacity. This explains why they have not been featured in official marketing.

Hutcherson's response suggests those involved intend to keep the cameos secret until the film's release. Some online comments have compared the situation to Andrew Garfield denying his role in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' before its premiere.

He spoke about his bond with the original cast, formed over roughly four years of filming. Working with them again would be exciting, he said. Hutcherson also expressed excitement for fans to see the new movie.

New Film Details

'Sunrise on the Reaping' is directed by Francis Lawrence, who has helmed all series films since 'Catching Fire.' It will be the first time Hutcherson and Lawrence have played Peeta and Katniss since 2015's 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.'

The story is set 24 years before the original book and film. This has required recasting all other established characters. The new cast includes several notable names.

Other confirmed cast members are Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, and Billy Porter as Magno Stift. The producers are Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson.

Release Context

The film is a prequel to the main series. Another prequel, 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,' was released in 2023, but did not feature the characters of Peeta or Katniss.

Based on the source novel, it is considered highly likely another actor from the original movies will also appear. The significance of Hutcherson and Lawrence returning, without their characters being recast, is heightened by the extensive recasting around them.

The screenplay is written by Billy Ray, Michael Lesslie, and author Suzanne Collins. 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' is scheduled for release in theaters on November 20, 2026.
