Ghosts movie trailer reveals October 2026

Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the upcoming feature film Ghosts: The Possession Of Button House. The supernatural comedy spin-off from the BBC sitcom is scheduled to land in UK cinemas on 23rd October 2026.

Directed by Simon Hynd, the film brings back the original creative team and cast from the television series. Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond have written the script and will reprise their roles. They will be joined by fellow series stars Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie, and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.

The latest trailer provides more insight into the movie's storyline. It shows Simon Farnaby's character, the trouserless MP Julian Fawcett, managing to escape Button House by possessing the body of a teenage boy. This act, however, traps the boy's spirit inside the mansion as a ghost. The plot suggests the boy must quickly return to his own body or risk being stuck as a ghost forever.

Production and background

The project was officially announced in February 2026. Filming began the following month at West Horsley Mansion and surrounding areas in Surrey. The film is a production by Monumental Television, with backing from BBC Film, BBC Studios, and Lionsgate.

The original Ghosts sitcom ran for five seasons from 2019, concluding with a Christmas special in 2023. In a joint statement, the creators said they had not planned to return after the series finale. But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn't resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure, they wrote. They described the film as a "soul-stirring tale of life and death."

The film promises to expand the show's beloved universe onto the big screen. Eva Yates, Director of BBC Film, expressed her enthusiasm, stating the team was "overjoyed" to bring Ghosts back for a "hilarious and cinematic adventure." The genre of comedy, with its origins in 5th century BCE Greek theatrical performance, often uses exaggeration and incongruity for humour-elements central to the Ghosts series' success.

Mathew Baynton shared the news on Instagram earlier this year, saying the team was so excited to be doing this and very grateful to everyone who is making it happen. The release date positions the film perfectly for Halloween viewing. The new trailer has already generated significant excitement among fans eager for more from the world of Button House.
