Netflix Plans Major Theatrical Release for KPop Demon Hunters Sequel
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed a broad global cinema rollout for the sequel to its Oscar-winning animated hit.

Netflix will give the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters a big, broad, global theatrical release. CEO Ted Sarandos revealed the plan for KPop Demon Hunters 2 at the Bloomberg Screentime event.
This move aligns with a new hybrid distribution strategy for Netflix's biggest titles. Sarandos stated the company is evaluating how to serve movie lovers who want to see films in theaters without harming Netflix's core subscription value. Success for these theater-first films will not be tied to traditional profit and loss metrics and will come with relatively low financial expectations.
The original film's unprecedented streaming and cultural impact
KPop Demon Hunters set a high bar. The 2025 animated film about four demon hunters who are also pop stars became the most-watched original title in Netflix history. It spent 63 consecutive weeks in the service's Global Top 10.
Its cultural reach extended far beyond streaming. The film won Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. Its soundtrack made history by placing four songs simultaneously in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. A special singalong version of the film later grossed 19 million dollars at the box office in just two days.
What we know about the sequel so far
Director Maggie Kang will return to helm the sequel, titled KPop Demon Hunters 2. Netflix and Sony Animation announced the project earlier this year. It is scheduled for release in 2029, though a specific date within that year has not been set.
All story details for the follow-up remain under wraps. It is also not yet confirmed if original cast members like Audrey Nuna, who provided a singing voice in the first film, will return.
Broader context: Netflix's evolving theatrical strategy
The KPop Demon Hunters sequel is part of a wider push. Netflix will begin reporting box office figures for the first time for a slate of upcoming films receiving exclusive theatrical windows. The company outlined planned cinema runs for several major titles.
| Film | Theatrical Window (Days) | Theatrical Release Date |
|---|---|---|
| La Bola Negra | 46 | October 16 |
| Mosquito Bowl | 26 | October 30 |
| The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth | 27 | November 25 |
| Ink | Not specified | December 11 |
| Narnia: The Magician's Nephew | 50 | February 12, 2027 |
| Charlie vs. The Chocolate Factory | 47 | November 5, 2027 |
La Bola Negra, which premiered at Cannes to very positive reviews, will get Netflix's first full 45-day theatrical window. It is described as the streamer's strongest Best Picture contender since 2018's Roma. Greta Gerwig's Narnia and the animated Charlie vs. The Chocolate Factory are also slated for wide releases.
The David Fincher-directed The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth holds a unique distinction. It will be the first Netflix film to receive an IMAX release, scheduled for November to coincide with Thanksgiving. Sarandos emphasized that movies performing well in cinemas are not necessarily bigger on Netflix afterwards.
Following their theatrical windows, these films will stream on Netflix. Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, for example, will arrive on the service in April 2027 after its February cinema run. The sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is planned for a theatrical release in 2029.
