Destoroyah returns in IDW's Godzilla #15 in December 2026 with a green redesign tied to the series' Kai-Sei energy.
Destoroyah, one of Godzilla's deadliest enemies, is officially returning to the franchise in December 2026. The kaiju, first seen in 1995's Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, will appear with a major redesign in IDW Publishing's Godzilla #15 comic.
According to Screen Rant, the creature is described as the ultimate kaiju killer. This time, its mission is not just to kill Godzilla but to potentially destroy the entire world to achieve that goal.
Destoroyah's Legacy and Origins
Destoroyah first appeared in the 1995 film Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, which concluded the Heisei era of Godzilla movies. The monster originated from microscopic Precambrian organisms that survived in the area where the Oxygen Destroyer was detonated in the 1954 film. Decades of exposure to the weapon's effects caused the organisms to mutate, evolve, and eventually merge into the singular entity known as Destoroyah.
This origin ties the villain directly to the weapon that killed the original Godzilla, deepening its significance within the franchise lore. Destoroyah solidified its iconic status by battling Godzilla during his Burning Godzilla state, resulting in one of the monster's most brutal and memorable fights.
The Comic Book Return and Redesign
IDW Publishing has confirmed Destoroyah's return through solicitation details for Godzilla #15, written by Tim Seeley and illustrated by Isaac Goodhart. The issue's synopsis states that Destoroyah is here. After lurking in the shadows for years, the ultimate kaiju killer has finally come online. It explains the creature was assembled by a character named Lament and a dark faction of G-Force, deemed too dangerous and cast aside for years.
The synopsis continues that Destoroyah will bring about Godzilla's doom, even if it takes the rest of the world with it. Cover art by Hendry Prasetya reveals Destoroyah's new look, which features a notable green color scheme.
The Reason for the Green Color
The green redesign is linked to the Kai-Sei energy source that defines IDW Publishing's Kai-Sei Era comic line. Screen Rant reports that IDW editor Jake Williams has explicitly stated Kai-Sei is the reason this version of Godzilla has green glowing veins and a green atomic breath. The mysterious energy is specifically green, setting the comic publisher's work apart visually from other Godzilla stories.
With this in mind, the series will likely reveal that Destoroyah has been awakened through the use of Kai-Sei, providing an explanation for the green-leaning redesign. The return was teased in the synopsis for Godzilla #14, scheduled for release on November IIII, 2026, which mentioned characters growing closer and closer to their goal, Destoroyah.
