Next James Bond Casting Nears Final Stage
The search for the next James Bond is in its final stages, with an announcement potentially due by year's end.
The next actor to play James Bond could be announced before the end of the year. According to producer Amy Pascal, speaking to Deadline, "the end of the year is a good bet" for news on the casting of cinema's most sought-after role.
Amazon MGM Studios, which now controls the franchise, confirmed the casting process was underway in May. Entertainment writer Daniel Richtman claimed last month on social media that the team is in the final round of casting and "might have already found their guy." Journalist Jeff Sneider echoed this, suggesting the final choice may not be among the publicly discussed frontrunners.
The Contenders for 007
A familiar list of names has circulated for months. They include Henry Cavill, Harris Dickinson, Jacob Elordi, Jack Lowden, James Norton, Jack O'Connell, Callum Turner, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Earlier this year, Variety reported that stage actor Tom Francis had auditioned. In late August, Page Six claimed that auditions would continue, adding 'Gladiator 2' star Paul Mescal and 'Heartstopper' actor Jack Barton to the list.
The producers' recent statement about keeping Bond's spirit alive "as he start his next adventure" seemingly confirms the character will remain male. However, it is unclear which rumoured names are based on solid inside information versus mere speculation.
The Audition Process
The audition process is elaborate. Potential Bonds typically perform a scene from 'From Russia With Love,' where 007 finds Tatiana Romanova in his bed. Director Martin Campbell told Gold Derby this scene tests an actor's physical presence and charisma without relying on action sequences. The 007 team has stated that screen tests are "elaborate affairs involving hair and make-up, costumes, sets, and other actors."
Announcement and Release Plans
The method of announcing the new Bond may break tradition. While past reveals were held at London press conferences, Amazon MGM could use its streaming platform. An exclusive reveal on Prime Video would likely drive subscriptions, though it would still receive global press coverage. Some fans speculate an announcement could come on Global James Bond Day, 5 October.
Little is confirmed about the next film, known temporarily as Bond 26. 'Peaky Blinders' creator Steven Knight is writing the script, and 'Dune' director Denis Villeneuve will direct. The release is widely reported for 2028, which would create the longest gap between Bond films, surpassing the six years and four months between 'Licence to Kill' and 'GoldenEye'.
Future of the Franchise
Amazon MGM has the resources to plan far ahead, considering story arcs and release schedules over the next decade. The studio may also explore spin-offs while being cautious not to oversaturate the market. The next film is rumoured to be a reboot set in Bond's early MI6 career, sidestepping the conclusive ending of Daniel Craig's final film, 'No Time to Die.' The classic promise, "James Bond will return," assures fans the spy's adventures will continue.
