Zack Snyder campaigns to adapt The Dark Knight Returns
Director Zack Snyder is publicly advocating to adapt Frank Miller's graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, despite the current DC Studios leadership
Zack Snyder is actively pitching a film adaptation of Frank Miller's classic graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns. The director made his case in a recent interview with Variety while promoting his upcoming film, The Last Photograph.
Snyder argues that adapting this specific story would bookend his earlier work on Watchmen, creating what he sees as a complete commentary on the superhero genre. "You can do no more than those two books," Snyder told Variety. He suggested Watchmen arrived at the beginning of the modern superhero movie era and that The Dark Knight Returns would fittingly arrive now, as the genre matures.
The current Batman landscape
This new campaign faces significant hurdles within the current DC Studios structure. The studio, now run by James Gunn and Peter Safran, is already developing two separate live-action Batman franchises. One features Robert Pattinson and is set to continue with The Batman Part II under director Matt Reeves. The other is The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a different Batman and is being directed by Andy Muschietti.
Adding a third concurrent cinematic Batman, especially one tied to Snyder's previous vision starring Ben Affleck, seems unlikely. Straight adaptations of iconic graphic novels are rare in live-action, and Snyder already incorporated elements of Miller's story into his 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
A history of unlikely revivals
Despite the obstacles, Snyder has a history of achieving what once seemed impossible. The campaign to release his cut of Justice League led to a four-hour version being produced and released after the original theatrical version. That fan-driven movement demonstrated a dedicated following, though it remains unclear if that support would translate to a new project.
Snyder's earlier DC films performed solidly at the box office. Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were commercial successes, especially compared to the studio's later struggles.
Potential corporate shake-up
Some speculation suggests a potential change in the corporate landscape could alter Snyder's prospects. Most important Skydance's proposed takeover of Warner Bros Discovery, if it proceeds, might lead to another leadership shift at DC Studios. Unverified rumors from online blogs suggest Most important's David Ellison could consider bringing Snyder back if James Gunn's contract expires as alleged next year.
For now, Snyder continues his public campaign for the project. While it has not yet sparked a fan movement on the scale of "release the Snyder cut," the director is determined to keep the idea in the conversation.
