Sam Mendes' Beatles Films Shift to Weekly 2028 Release
Sam Mendes' four Beatles biopics, starring Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan, will now be released a week apart in April 2028, abandoning the initial same-day launch plan.

Sam Mendes is directing four separate films about The Beatles, each focusing on a different band member. The movies, starring Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, will now be released a week apart across April 2028.
Release Strategy Shift
The ambitious cinematic event, originally planned for a single-day premiere, has been reconfigured into a staggered weekly rollout. Sony confirmed the four films will be released in the same month in 2028, one after the other. This marks a significant change from Mendes's earlier stated intention to have all four movies appear in cinemas on the same day. By the fourth week of the rollout, all four films are expected to be playing simultaneously in theaters.
Producer’s Vision
Producer Pippa Harris, Mendes's longtime producing partner, discussed the strategy at the BFI London Film Festival. She described the project as a big endeavor designed to create cinema’s first 'bingeable moment.' Harris emphasized that each film stands alone as an individual story but possesses a cumulative power greater than the sum of its parts. She clarified the studio's hopes for audience engagement. "Now that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re thinking that people will go and see all four films on the same day," Harris said. The goal is for viewers to experience all four within the same month, whether that means one per week or varied weekend viewings.
Production and Casting Details
The massive production has been shooting for 180 days. The scripts were written by Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan, and Jack Thorne. The supporting cast features several notable names, bringing key figures from the Beatles' circle to life.
Sony Pictures Entertainment is financing and distributing the films worldwide with the full support of Apple Corps Ltd. This project marks the first time Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the estates of John Lennon and George Harrison have granted full life-story and music-catalog rights for a scripted feature.
Context and Background
The project was first announced approximately three years ago. Early reports suggested a Rashomon-style approach, telling the story of the band's breakup from each member's perspective, and rumors pointed to a same-day release. As recently as July 2024, Mendes indicated a same-day plan was his intention, though it was unclear if it aligned with Sony's strategy. The current plan for a weekly April 2028 release represents a formalization of the strategy. Harris's production catalogue includes films like 'Revolutionary Road' and 'Jarhead.' The final release order for the four films has not been revealed. By week four of the release, all four movies are expected to be playing simultaneously in theaters.
