Paramount to Adapt Cyberpunk 2077 as Live-Action Film

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to oversee the adaptation.

This project is part of Paramount's expanding game-to-screen stable. The studio is actively building a franchise portfolio from interactive intellectual property.

Context and Connections

The Cyberpunk 2077 movie joins other Paramount game-to-film adaptations. These include the successful Sonic the Hedgehog series and upcoming projects based on major franchises.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed his involvement with multiple major properties. "I’m also overseeing the new Transformers," the producer said.

Game Background

The film is based on CD Projekt Red's best-selling action-adventure RPG. The Poland-based, award-winning developer is the franchise rights holder.

The base game Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Released in 2020, the dystopian open-world action RPG was years in development, and hugely ambitious.

It is set in the fictional cyberpunk metropolis of Night City in California. The player controls V, a mercenary who becomes imbued with a cybernetic biochip containing an engram of Johnny Silverhand.

Keanu Reeves voiced and portrayed Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rockstar and terrorist. His consciousness begins to overwrite V’s, forcing an uneasy alliance. The report mentions the possibility of Reeves reprising his role for the film.

Expansion and Universe

The Cyberpunk universe has grown significantly beyond the original game. The Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million copies.

That expansion introduced Idris Elba's character, Solomon Reed. The article mentions the possibility of Elba's character appearing in the movie.

An animated show titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released on Netflix in 2022. A second season of Edgerunners is mentioned as an upcoming Cyberpunk story.

Story and Themes

The film adaptation will be set in the same universe as the game. It will not necessarily be a direct recreation of the game's story.

The game's plot follows mercenary V and their fight against the Arasaka Corporation. This powerful megacorporation acts as the de facto ruler of Night City.

The core narrative conflict involves confronting Arasaka's control. V and Johnny Silverhand must work together to survive as their consciousnesses merge.

The film remains in development with no director or screenwriter currently attached.
