Man of Tomorrow is coming to break a negative Superman streak that has endured for decades, and the new DC movie will do what the DCEU never could. James Gunn cast David Corenswet as DC's new Superman, replacing former Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill in the role because he wanted to tell the story of a younger Superman in the DCU Chapter One.

While initially divisive, the decision to recast the role worked out well for the franchise, as 2025's Superman finished its box office run with $618.7 million. That success led to the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow being quickly green-lit by DC Studios. The upcoming superhero movie will fly into theaters on July 9, 2027. It will once again be written and directed by Gunn.

All eyes are on Man of Tomorrow, given how the DCU's first Superman spinoff, Milly Alcock's Supergirl movie, became a box office bomb a couple of months ago. Given how Man of Tomorrow's cast will include several DCU heroes, such as Aaron Pierre's John Stewart after his role in HBO's Lanterns, there is a solid chance that it will be an event movie audiences show up for.

Before he was Clark Kent, Superman was born Kal-El on a distant planet doomed to destruction. His parents Jor-El and Lara placed him in a rocket ship as an infant, sending him across the cosmos to Earth. On Rotten Tomatoes, Superman boasts a near-perfect 90% audience score.

As such, it is clear that audiences love Corenswet's version of Superman, not just the character in general, and his return in a sequel merely two years later finally breaks a negative DC streak that has endured for decades.

Production Details

James Gunn serves as writer and director for the project. David Corenswet takes the lead role as the new Superman, with the cast also featuring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart following his appearance in HBO's Lanterns. The film continues the DCU Chapter One narrative established by the 2025 Superman release.

Reception Context

The 2025 Superman film achieved a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating strong audience reception for Corenswet's portrayal. This success provided the foundation for the rapid green-lighting of the sequel. The follow-up arrives two years after its predecessor concluded its theatrical run.

Cast and Characters

The sequel features returning and new talent within the DCU framework. Aaron Pierre portrays John Stewart, the Green Lantern, having previously appeared in HBO's Lanterns series. The ensemble supports the continuation of the younger Superman narrative established in the previous film.
