Ben Affleck revived and reworked his film Animals after initially shelving it due to devastating similarities with a Spike Lee and Denzel Washington project. The thriller, now set for a Netflix release on October 9, 2026, shifted from a contained plot exercise to a nuanced exploration of marriage and performative morality.

Affleck received a phone call about a similar movie in production by Spike Lee and Denzel Washington titled Highest 2 Lowest. He found the competing project devastating and decided to pull the plug on Animals just weeks before filming was set to start. Affleck stated he did not want to compete with or be compared to the duo. "They're two guys who I really admire, and I was not interested in competing with [them] or being compared," Affleck said. After putting the project aside for months, Affleck and producer Matt Damon decided to rework the story.

Creative Evolution

Affleck shifted the film from a contained thriller to a nuanced exploration of marriage, authenticity, and moral complexity under pressure. He questioned the nature of marriage and authenticity as a new thematic direction, using the kidnapping of the couple's son as a catalyst to explore marital truth, not as the central focus. Affleck described the original version as a dated, contained thriller exercise with archetypal characters. He felt the initial wife character was purely virtuous and lecturing, while the husband was feckless, a dynamic he considered reminiscent of 2021 storytelling.

The revised version leans into gray areas. Affleck cited themes around marriage, the capacity to show one's true self, and morality as performative as exciting to explore. He believed making characters' morality murky added tension and kept the audience guessing. Affleck wanted audiences to continuously calibrate their judgments. He held a two-week workshop before shooting to discuss dialogue, noting that writers Luis Gerardo Méndez, Adriana Paz, Kerry Washington, and Steven Yeun all contributed meaningfully.

Cast and Production

Kerry Washington joined the cast after Jennifer Garner exited, with Affleck taking the lead role following Damon's scheduling conflict. Affleck directs, co-writes, and stars in the film as Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate. Washington co-stars as his wife, Abigail. The plot involves a ransom countdown and shady political tactics. Washington was the first cast member, followed by Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Adriana Paz. Ray Fisher and Christopher Woodley also appear.

Affleck initially planned to direct but not star, with Matt Damon and Jennifer Garner originally enlisted for the leads. Garner bowed out due to concerns about audiences reading too much into the marital dynamics given her real-life history with Affleck. The production used AI technology from a company Affleck founded, trained only on Animals inputs, to assist with post-production challenges like changing lights or visual effects removals. Affleck described AI as a tool akin to the advent of sound, emphasizing it should be invisible and derived from human work.

Context and Release

Affleck's sixth directorial feature, Animals, is a 106-minute thriller set for Netflix release in October 2026, building on his acclaimed directorial legacy. His previous directorial works include Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and the Oscar-winning Argo. The film represents his return to directing and starring simultaneously since 2023's Air.

Thematic Payoff

The film uses the kidnapping as a catalyst to examine performative morality and the real nature of marriage, aiming to challenge audience judgments throughout. Affleck found the project fertile ground due to these themes. "What happens...when they can no longer be their performative selves? What's the real nature of a marriage? What is marriage built on?" he asked. He stated that directors must feel a project is fertile ground to stay engaged for over a year, or the movie dies. Animals is streaming on Netflix as of October 9, 2026.
