Barbie 2 Stalls Over Salary Demands
Warner Bros' plans for a Barbie sequel are in jeopardy due to a dispute over salary demands. The studio is at odds with the film's director, Greta Gerwig, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who are seeking a significant share of the profits and a substantial salary.
Warner Bros' highly anticipated Barbie sequel is facing an uncertain future due to a salary dispute between the studio and the film's key creatives. The issue at hand is the proposed compensation package for director Greta Gerwig, co-writer Noah Baumbach, and leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. According to reports, Warner Bros has made multiple offers to the team, but several of them have been rejected so far. ## The Sticking Point: David Zaslav's Salary Concerns A major point of contention in the negotiations is Warner Bros boss David Zaslav's reluctance to sign off on a more recent offer. Zaslav is reportedly concerned that the proposed deal is too generous, with some sources suggesting that it could amount to "life-changing money" for the cast and crew. However, not everyone agrees that the offer is particularly astronomical. Another insider pointed out that, considering the team's bankability and the massive success of the first film, the proposed deal may not be overly generous. ## The Lack of Obligations in the Original Contract Interestingly, the original contracts for the first Barbie film did not include any obligations for the cast and crew to make a sequel. This means that Warner Bros had to negotiate a new deal with the team, which has led to the current impasse. ## The Consequences of a Failed Deal If Warner Bros fails to resolve the situation, the rights to the franchise will revert back to Mattel, the toymaker that owns the rights to the Barbie brand. This would mean that Mattel would no longer be able to use any of the ideas or characters from Gerwig's incarnation of the doll. The situation has taken on an ironic twist, given that Zaslav's compensation package in 2025 was a staggering $165m. If Warner Bros merges with Paramount, Zaslav's potential earnings could reach anywhere between $550m and $1bn. Warner Bros now has until December to resolve the situation, or else the deal with Mattel will expire. The fate of the Barbie sequel hangs in the balance, and it remains to be seen whether the studio and the cast and crew can come to a mutually agreeable deal.
