Pirates Of The Caribbean: Progress on Sixth Entry Remains Slow

There appears to be little progress on a sixth Pirates Of The Caribbean film, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that he's still in talks with Johnny Depp about returning to the franchise.

A sixth entry in the Pirates Of The Caribbean adventure series may still emerge, but progress has been slow so far.

Over the weekend, Bruckheimer spoke at Disney's D23 jamboree, where he hinted at some sort of movement on the project. He stated, "We're talking to Johnny. We're working on a screenplay. Hopefully we can get this done."

This comment suggests that some progress is being made, but it's worth noting that there have been few updates on the project in the past 18 months. In fact, the situation is roughly the same as it was at the end of 2024, when there were reports that Bruckheimer and Disney were considering two different scripts for the film.

One script featured Johnny Depp reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, while the other had Margot Robbie in the lead as a new character. In August 2025, Bruckheimer spoke publicly about courting Depp for the lead role, saying, "If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it. It's all about what's on the page, as we all know."

However, it's worth noting that Bruckheimer has also stated that Margot Robbie is still attached to the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, and that a script is being worked on with her involvement.

It's been almost a decade since the release of the fifth Pirates film, 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales. Since then, a number of writers have been hired to work on sequel scripts, including franchise regular Ted Elliott and The Last Of Us showrunner Craig Mazin.
